News from Janet & Jim Austen

Jim and I had hoped to see everyone in Grand  Rapids for the National Convention in September but like the saying goes " the best laid plans of mice and man often goes astray".  We have had to cancel our plans due to a surgery I am scheduled for on August 19th.

Last fall I had a Squamous Cell carcinoma skin cancer removed from my lower leg and thought that was it but it grew and they did more surgery in December to remove more and do skin grafting.  They say that squamous cell very seldom travel but of course I would have to be different and some of the cells have traveled north and I will have a growth removed from my upper leg and probably have to have treatments to make sure they get it all.  This is a new experience for me and not sure what to expect but trusting the Lord's guidance on the surgeon and others treating me and whatever He has iin store for me will have to accept.
We will be thinking of everyone in Grand Rapids and am sure it will be a great Convention., God Bless and Love Jim and Janet

We would like to thank the many friends who offered their prayers and support throughout this difficult time after the sudden and unexpected illness and death of our son-in-law, Joe. Not only was he the father of our youngest grandson, he was a truly loving and caring member of our family. We will all miss him dearly.

Bob Schaefer Retired Postmaster-Alger OH, and NAPUS member had surgery this morning, Wednesday, April 7, 2010,  to unblock a valve below his heart that was 100% blocked.

He is at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima and will be there for the rest of this week.

Update on Bob:

I spoke to Bob's wife and Surgery was more invasive than what was expected. They had to do a Bypass on one side of his heart.

He is on a Heart/Lung machine (Ventilator) currently because he is having problems coming out of the anesthesia. He is currently tied to the bed with a nurse in his room 24/7. (get your mind out of the gutter people) The restraints and nurse are because of the problems with coming out of the anesthesia. He was thrashing around so this is for protection I guess.

The surgery was expected to last 6 hours however ended up over 9 hours.

Basically his condition ended up to be the worse case scenario so he will be in Cardiac ICU for a while.

Originally they expected him to be hospitalized around 5 days now it may be longer than 10 days.

No visitors are permitted but family.

Other than that Deb said the repair from the surgery is doing well which is the good news.
